About the event
The Housing Consortium of Everett & Snohomish County is pleased to present a panel discussion regarding the outcomes of the Casino Road Affordable Housing Workplan. Developed through a community stakeholder-based action planning process led by Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), this effort was commissioned to ensure that Casino Road residents benefit from diverse housing options - including the preservation and creation of quality affordable housing and new homeownership opportunities - as the expansion of light rail, transit, and other transportation amenites are developed in their community.
BACKGROUND
Local Initiatives Support Corporation has been engaged with the Casino Road neighborhood since 2022, working toward inclusive economic opportunity in partnership with community leaders. The goal of LISC’s work has been to advance health and wealth through a place-focused and people-centered approach to district, business and talent development in the neighborhood. It intends to help address barriers to inclusive growth and economic mobility, particularly those experienced by Black, Indigenous and other people of color.
Among the key priorities identified in the Casino Road Economic Development Agenda, completed by LISC and community stakeholders, is the desire for affordable housing and housing stability. Preserving and creating affordable housing opportunities in the Casino Road neighborhood will enable current residents to maintain stability and existing connections to the community.
The goal of the Casino Road Affordable Housing Workgroup was to bring together a group stakeholders to coordinate actions to mitigate displacement in Casino Road community, using a place-based lens for affordable housing, housing stability and maintaining community continuity. The goal was to create a coordinated workplan that connects affordable housing work from key stakeholders in support of the affordable housing goal of the economic agenda, focused on the next 5 – 7 years. The workgroup gathered monthly for 5 months to surface existing work, set the stage for planned activities that could be aligned in support of the agenda’s goals, and envision future projects to meet the community’s housing needs. The group explored existing work, developed project concepts, deepened connections and identified leadership roles that each could play.
Elements of the work plan focus on:
- Preservation of affordable rental units
- Creation of new affordable housing units
- Tenant and homeowner preservation and stabilization
- Expanded homeownership opportunities
- Enabling environment
